History and Highlights of Eau Gallie
Eau Gallie is an area in the city of Melbourne, located on the city's northside. The area was an independent city in Brevard County from 1860 all the way up to 1969. In 1969, the residents of Eau Gallie and Melbourne voted to merge their governments which resulted in Eau Gallie being named Melbourne.
Originally, Eau Gallie developed as a small coastal town alongside the Indian River on Florida's East Coast. In 1859, the US Army sent out John Houston to conduct a Seminole Indian census. When he arrived, Houston fell head-over-heels with the area's beauty. He took a leave of absence and applied for a soldier's land grant. He then traveled to the area of what is now Eau Gallie with his sons and 10 slaves, with his wife joining him only a year later.
When the Civil War happened, the land luckily did not change too much. Former lieutenant governor, William Henry Gleason founded Eau Gallie in 1869 as he was traversing from Miami to Arlington. Gleason obtained land consisting of the whole area from the Indian River Lagoon to Lake Washington (roughly thirty square miles).
