History and Highlights of Malabar
The town of Malabar was incorporated in 1962 and is located between Palm Bay, Melbourne, and the Indian River. As of 2010, the population is around 3,000 and the town has a total area of 13.2 square miles.
Before 1900, oak, cypress, and pine forests that inhabited what is now Malabar attracted the interest of both the U.S. Navy and lumber businesses. The shapes the trees took closer to the Indian River Lagoon were an ideal shape for wooden hulls of the time. The lagoon was also of good use for the transportation of goods. On December 24, 1883, Malabar received full recognization from the U.S. Postal Service and R.A Ward was appointed first Postmaster for the small population that resided in the are. Twice a week - -if weather permitted-- a mailboat would travel from Jacksonville along the Intracostal Waterway and would deliver mail. A palmetto shack served as the post office and resided near what is today the Malabar Road and U.S. Highway 1 intersection.
Soon enough, mailboats were phased out and replaced by the railroad. The clearing of land followed swiftly after which made way for further development. Use of the surrounding land was utilized for cattle grazing and farming various "truck farming" products. As the world evolved quicker by the day, county officials decided to incorporate Malabar as a town due to developers looking to build trailer parks and high-density housing areas.
