Highlights of Florida’s Brevard County Space Coast
Florida’s Space Coast is a 72-mile Atlantic shoreline stretches from the Canaveral National Seashore to the famous-for-surfing Sebastian Inlet and is the well-known home of Kennedy Space Center, for which the Space Coast got its name. Blastoffs to outer space play a role in the area’s popularity, but don’t let that fool you; there’s more to the Space Coast than meets the eye.
Below are 10 reasons why you should consider Florida’s beautiful Space Coast for your new home.
1. Rocket Launches
Watching the rockets launch is nothing compared to seeing the display in person. The rumbling, bumbling shake of the earth and the rocket’s booming roars can’t be recreated through a television screen. Top it off with the bright, billowing flames of take-off and the cloud of smoke it leaves behind, and you’ll never want to miss a launch party.
2. Kennedy Space Center
Ever wanted to meet an astronaut? How about have lunch with one? The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex offers that and so much more. Check out the Space Shuttle Atlantis and experience your own spaceflight adventure with several simulators. You can also visit the Heroes & Legends exhibit - featuring, of course, the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame - as well as take tours through the Rocket Garden to see the massive constructs for yourself.
3. Nature’s Light Shows
Thanks to the miniscule dinoflagellates floating around the Indian River Lagoon, Banana River, and Mosquito Lagoon, you’ll find yourself enchanted by the natural underwater light shows of Florida’s own Space Coast. There are several tour operators - one such being Calypso Kayaking - that offer nightly tours. Live out the fairytale experience you’ve always dreamed of; lights will be dancing on your fingertips with just a brush against the water!
4. Zoos and Ziplines
Looking for adventure? The esteemed Brevard Zoo is home to 800 animals (including giraffes, sloths, lorikeets, and so much more) that are so eager to meet you. For a low cost, take a kayaking trip down Nyami Nyami River to observe rhinos and lemurs enjoying the day. Likewise, paddle boats will take you to wetland habitats where native birds and turtles like to spend their time.
The zoo’s popular Treetop Trek is a unique way of seeing the animals; 14 zip lines soar above the enclosures and provide a new point of view than what most zoos offer. Similarly, but elsewhere in the area, there is the Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures that is much more fast-paced: 50 challenges await you in oak tree canopies, 45 feet high off the ground. You’ll get the experience - and adrenaline rush - of a lifetime!
5. The Beaches
Melbourne Beach is the place to be if you enjoy a more serene oceanside. It stretches 33 miles alongside the Indian River Lagoon and has a charm suitable for the whole family. And if the beach isn’t your style, the river is just across the road! Hotels and small inns are abundant here, offering both visitors and residents alike a home away from home.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for something a little more hustle-and-bustle, there is the 800-foot Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier. This historical landmark has known widespread popularity since as early as 1962 and entertains guests with a myriad of choices to spend the day - and evening. Five restaurants and four bars are its main attractions, but the pier is also peppered with gift shops and live entertainment. Even fishermen love the atmosphere - and abundance of fish - enough to cast their lines here for hours on end.
6. Surf’s Up
If you love to hit the waves, or are even just curious about surfing, the Space Coast is for you. The area is home to not only world champion surfer Kelly Slater but many others who consider surfing a way of life. Sebastian Inlet’s First Peak - located in Melbourne Beach - is not only where Kelly Slater honed his skills, but where you can, too. You can plan a trip to the Florida Surf Museum, nestled inside the Ron Jon Surf Shop complex - or, better yet, rent yourself a board and check out the waves for yourself. If that doesn’t suit your tastes, there is an abundance of other activities to be found; Honest John’s Fish Camp offers rentals on canoes, paddle boards, fishing boats, and kayaks. There’s something for everyone!
7. Port Canaveral
Sail away from it all with the help of Port Canaveral, the third largest cruise passenger port in the world. Home to the Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, and the Disney Cruise Line, it’s guaranteed to make your next vacation one you’ll love to remember.
Not only that, but the port’s entertainment district, The Cove, offers plenty of attractions. The Exploration Tower is seven stories full of exhibits - not to mention, a prime location for viewing rocket launches. Several dining options include, but are not limited to, Fishlips Waterfront Bar & Grill and Grills Seafood Deck & Tiki Bar, both of which offer great views of the magnificent cruise ships out at sea.
8. The Dinosaur Store
There’s even fun to be had outside of the water with The Dinosaur Store, esteemed and well-known, located in Cocoa Beach. This museum and shop house an array of quality fossils, such as dinosaur eggs, teeth, and claws. They have minerals, too; you can purchase jewelry made of amber, meteorites, and tektites as a gift for the dino fan - or fans - in your life.
On top of that, the Adventure Zone inside The Dinosaur Store is open 7 days a week and books great birthday parties, family reunions, and educational field trips. Best part? It’s only 2 miles from the ocean, so you can take the party outdoors, too!
9. The Sunrise
Last but not least, the well-known sunrises that will greet you each morning - provided you set your alarm early enough to catch it - with a nature-painted canvas of charming, tranquil colors.
