History and Highlights of Grant-Valkaria
Originally established in 1925, the Grant community has a history as a fishing and agricultural village. Valkaria, the name of the other community in which it has joined together with over the years, is derived from the word ‘Valkyrie’, a warrior-maiden prominent in Norse mythology.
Grant-Valkaria is a mostly rural town located at the Southern end of the county. Older and newer homes are present in the town, along with acre-plus lots and the county-owned Habitat Golf Course, which is a 6,836-yard par-72 course close to the Valkaria Airport. A MISTRAL missile tracking system was also built in the conjoined town by the US Air Force in the first few years of the 1960s.
Each year the town has held the Grant Seafood Festival, occurring on the last weekend of February, since 1966. In 1968, the then U.S. Vice-President Hubert Humphrey took a trip to the Seafood Festival during his 1968 presidential bid campaign. The proceeds of the festival go towards college scholarships for local students, as well as the community’s summer vacation activities. The historic Benson House is also present in Grant-Valkaria.
Grant-Valkaria had a taxable real estate base reaching $503.37 million in 2007 and the town’s charter depicts the reason for incorporation. It calls for any future developments to be consistent with a rural fishing village lifestyle, one that maintains the history and natural greenness of the two conjoined communities. Government services are kept at a minimum, with density kept at a low minimum and lot sizes large.
