History and Highlights of Mims
Mims is a semi-rural community located in North Brevard county, with an estimated population of around 7,000 residents. It is a good 22.4 square miles, 5.3 of which are water, so there is plenty of land to utilize. The average income in 2012 was $35,216 and 15% of the population lived under the poverty line but, in comparison to the rest of the country, Mim’s cost of living is 9.8% less.
This town is a place for those looking to purchase a lot of land for a reasonable price and, with its abundance of space and plethora of wooded trails, is an ideal area to raise horses. Salt Lake Wildlife Management Area holds many miles that are good for riding and the North Brevard Horseman’s Club is a fantastic place to find others who share interests regarding equestrian activities.
Opportunities for work consist of, yet are not restricted to, the Kennedy Space Center, Brevard Community College, and the Parrish Medical Center. In addition, Mims is also the nearest Brevard County city to Orlando, making it an astoundingly pleasant place for those wanting to look for some kind of city employment but at a lower cost of living.
Being so quiet and rural, Mims is not for those who enjoy a fast-paced or busy lifestyle because it doesn’t have many restaurants or shopping options. It has a Walgreens, a Dollar Store, and a gas station but little else. However, if adventuring is how you prefer to spend your free time, there are decent restaurants and stores located no farther than thirty minutes away. Mims is a peaceful town with lots of room to grow.
In 1951 Harry T. Moore, the famous civil rights leader as well as the founder of Brevard County's NAACP, was killed in his Mims home alongside his wife, Harriette Moore. Racially spurred by the individuals from the Ku Klux Klan, the killings started a more than 50-year examination in the condition of Florida.
