History and Highlights of Palm Bay
In 1887, early homesteaders opted to settle in a town named Tillman. the town was located at the mouth of Turkey Creek, where the Tillman post was eventually established. Years later, in 1925, the town’s 2,000 residents petitioned to change the name Tillman to Palm Bay, figuring the latter was a more accurate representation of their charming town.
Under the leadership of Mayor Harry Pollak and the town council, Palm Bay grew bigger and eventually was incorporated as a city with 2,808 residents in 1960. Three years later, in 1963, US Highway #1 was completed. A total of six years after the city’s incorporation, their first school, dubbed Palm Bay Elementary, was built in 1966. Fire Station #1 was built on Palm Bay Road the same year (1967) Harris-Seybold acquired Radiation, Inc., which is known today as the Harris Corporation.
Palm Bay’s first bank and Dutch Inn Motel, which is now known as the Palm Bay Inn, was built in 1974 and the first library had its grand opening on Port Malabar Boulevard in 1984, ten years apart. From there, Palm Bay became the most populous city in Brevard County in 1990, holding 62,632 residents. In 1992, the Palm Bay Community Hospital finally opened.
After twelve years, in 2004, Palm Bay was hit by hurricanes Charley, Jeanne, and Frances. The effect was crushing, the damage and clean-up costing the city $13 million dollars. Soon after the storms’ decimation, Palm Bay got their confirmation as a "Green Local Government" from the Florida Green Building Coalition in 2009. A year after that, the city of Palm Bay celebrated their 50th-year commemoration in 2010 as well as the completion of another City Hall Annex in 2011. As of today, Palm Bay is thriving and has a population of over 100,000, making it the largest populated city in Central Florida.
