History and Highlights of Port St. John
The area of Port St. John is enumeration-designated, located in Brevard County, Florida, between Cocoa and Titusville. It is included in the Palm Bay - Melbourne - Titusville Metropolitical Statistical Area and at the United States Census in 2010 the population was a recorded 12,267.
Five residents of Port St. John formed, in 2002, the “Port St. John For Tomorrow” (PSJ4T) group and attempted to incorporate the area. The PSJ4T’s incorporation plans included the five communities of Delespine, Williams Point, Hardeeville, Frontenac and a part of Sharpes. However, the group failed to inform the five communities and when they found out, the five communities were not interested in being a part of the incorporation effort. The PSJ4T requested a feasibility study, which was approved by voters and funded by Brevard County as well as performed by the University of Central Florida.
The five Tallahassee committees tasked with reviewing the study reported that it was “deeply flawed,” so the county allowed residents of Port St. John and the five communities to vote on the area becoming an actual city. Randy Ball and Howard Futch sponsored the bills in the House and Senate, where the incorporation issue was defeated in November of 2002. 73% to 27% in a landslide win for citizens against incorporating and most of the people within the five communities. The state’s statute prohibited Port St. John from becoming incorporated for ten more years.
