History and Highlights of Rockledge
Officially developed on August 7, 1887, Rockledge became the oldest incorporated town in Brevard County. Its name of Rockledge, which was attributed to early settler Gardner S. Hardee, springs from the various ledges of coquina rock lining the Indian River. The city was ab initio known as Rockledge and the two-word name continued throughout the 19th century. The area’s early trade centered on the commercialism of citrus and tourist accommodations for those traveling to South Everglade State via the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway of the Indian stream.
In the earlier moments of the 20th century, Rockledge became a resort for vacationers. Throughout winter, its population would rise from 200 to just about 2,000 people. Access to Rockledge was through railroad and boat up to around 1911, with Indian River steamboats and Henry Flagler’s trains bringing folks North. Sailboats and tiny launches usually unloaded freight and passengers within the area. At that point, most of the tourists were affluent enough to use boats to connect to the rail system. However, once World War I began, the invention of the car abled the common person to travel the world
