History and Highlights of Satellite Beach Florida
Incorporated in 1957, Satellite Beach rests south of Patrick Air Force base and north of Indian Harbour Beach along the barrier island. In the 1950s and 1960s, Brevard County suffered a devastating housing shortage, summoned by Kennedy Space Center’s rapid employment increase; the Apollo program’s mission to send a man to the moon called for droves of extra hands to make the dream a reality. In turn, the responsibility of handling such an extreme demand for new houses fell on the residential communities in the area, one such being Satellite Beach. Percy L. Hedgecock founded the community and with the help of Jimmy Caudle, his brother-in-law, and Dumont Smith, his cousin, he was able to grow the area’s real estate. Together, the trio built a majority of the community’s original houses and Percy became the mayor of Satellite Beach in 1957 until 1973.
Satellite Beach received the primary annual Florida Excellence in Coastal Management Award in 1994 because the city proceeded in its formation development. Over the years, volunteers provided over 10,000 hours annually to youth and public service programs. The city began preparing for global warming’s rising ocean levels in 2010 and by 2011 Satellite Beach became one of the few areas within America to collaborate within the installment of municipal building solar panels.
In Satellite Beach, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) recently entered into a Joint Participation Agreement of funding the landscaping being done on the South Patrick Drive passageway within the city. Under the term agreements, the FDOT will reimburse Satellite Beach for the landscaping enhancements. State Representative John Tobia received permission in July 2012 to construct a house on Shell Street in Satellite Beach that has a light-emitting diode (LED) that would increase real estate within the neighboring areas. Throughout the year of 2013, the city declared it would undertake $36 million of labor (financially supported by Brevard County and therefore the FDEF) to revive the beaches and dunes on the coast, together with areas battered by the brutal 2004 hurricanes. Some within the community voiced considerations regarding the fragility of the reef.
