History and Highlights of Sebastian
Sebastian’s natural aesthetic - sabal palms, egrets, live oaks, pelicans, a tidal pond, a stream, a seashore - is a significant reason why individuals move to the zone so regularly. In its early years, a large part of Sebastian was built ashore in the middle of a lagoon and a river. The proximity of those two waterways is what made Sebastian such an appealing spot for early pioneers.
The St. Sebastian River is a freshwater tributary that flows parallel to the present-day US 1 and the Florida East Coast Railway. It is the central tributary of the Indian River lagoon in the Sebastian territory. A western prong of the river, which existed when the area was settled, turned out to be a piece of the C54 drainage canal. The Indian River lagoon frames the eastern outskirt of the Sebastian territory, and the St. Sebastian River shapes the western limit. Along with the river, the area of Micco, FL boarders Sebastian.
More so than any other occasion, it was the sinking of the 1715 Spanish Plate Fleet off the shoreline of Florida that gave the Treasure Coast its name. An armada of twelve ships left Havana, substantial weighed down with Spanish fortune and crashed into the coast of Florida between the St. Lucie and Sebastian Inlets by a nasty hurricane. In 1988, not a long way from the Sebastian Inlet, those seeking treasure found $300,000 in artifacts and jewelry that had been at the bottom since 1715.
The primary settlements in Sebastian go back to the 1880s when 40 pioneers moved to a town south of the St. Sebastian River. Sebastian had started to rise as a little angling town before the end of the century. One of the first business angling families, Archie Smith and Bascomb Judah, still work from their unique fishing house situated on Indian River Drive. Today, Sebastian has a working waterfront that grandstands the rich social history of the angling business. The angling business is alive and flourishing today, alongside a plethora of water-based exercises, hotels with a beautiful waterfront view, and waterfront eateries that present the fish of the day.
America's National Wildlife Refuge System was first settled in Sebastian in 1903 when President Teddy Roosevelt consented to ensure pelicans and other birds creatures had a safe haven known as Pelican Island by marking a request making it the primary Wildlife Refuge in the nation.
